Common problems
Polka dot plant wilting
A polka dot plant collapses dramatically when thirsty and recovers within an hour or two of a drink — it wants to stay lightly moist, every five to seven days in summer. If it wilts with wet compost, the roots are the problem; let it dry out and ease off.
Polka dot plant losing its spots
The pink or white spots fading to green mean not enough light — the colour needs bright, indirect light. Move it nearer a window, out of direct midday sun, and the new leaves come in spotted. Pinch the tips to keep it bushy while you are at it.
Polka dot plant leggy
Long, thin stems with leaves only at the ends are the plant reaching for light and, left alone, its natural habit — it wants pinching. Cut the stems back by half, above a pair of leaves, every few weeks through the growing season, and move it to brighter light. It fills out within a month.
