Common problems
Christmas cactus limp and wrinkled
Limp, wrinkled segments are thirst — it is a forest cactus, not a desert one, and wants more water than people give it: every ten to fourteen days in summer, when the top few centimetres are dry. One thorough soak and the segments plump up within a couple of days.
Christmas cactus base mushy
A soft, mushy base with segments dropping off is overwatering and rot. Stop watering, cut away everything soft, let it dry, and repot into gritty compost. Healthy segments root easily laid on dry compost, so a rotten plant is rarely a total loss.
Christmas cactus not flowering
It sets buds in autumn in response to cool nights — around fifteen degrees — and long dark nights, so a plant in a warm room lit until midnight will not flower. From late September give it a cool, bright spot, no artificial light in the evenings, and slightly less water; buds show within six weeks. Once they form, do not move it: it drops buds in protest.
